Creon and Antigone

Today you explored two versions of the scene between Antigone and Creon. 

Which scene did you work on? 

What did you think of the style of the writing? 

How was this scene different to the other script used in the lesson? 

Did the language make the characters change? 

In groups you then created a version of Antigone focusing on setting it in a specific context. By doing this you had to focus on the use of the language in the piece.

Today we started of with a simple exercise using our voices and bodies to move round the space and pause at the same time we then incorporated a line from the text. 

After this we paired up with a boy and half of the class got given a different version of a scene with Creon and Antigone fighting about the burial of Antigone's brother. I worked with Daniel and we got version 1. I enjoyed this piece but i can see the style of writing has changed dramatically. The language is much simpler and easier to read but the vocabulary is also very descriptive. An example of this is creon says- ‘You know your just like your father. Stubborn and infuriating and completely inflexible’. 

The Differences between version 1 & 2 and the original script -

  • The language was more intense in version 2 this was shown through the text and how the actors portrayed it. 
  • Creon and Antigone seemed less unbalanced on a status level as Antigone fought back with her beliefs and what she felt was right. 
  • In version 1 shorter sentences were used and the punctuation was more appropriate and effective whereas in version 2 there was very little punctuation such as Creon and Antigone didn't have capital letters.
  • The original script was very spaced out and the language was historical and sometimes unclear because it has developed a lot throughout the years such as the line- ‘ Happy are they whose life has no taste of sorrow’. Over the time we have learnt to connect words with others so it reads clearly but often in this text you have to look clearly into it to understand what it means. 

The language effected how the characters changed because simpler words could be read easier which meant more enfaces was put on them and we could see the characters build further. We can also see there different views and how there status effects the language they use. 

I worked with Rory, Benji, Nina and Michelle. We came up with a modern setting but we put a twist on it. As the unit is Multimedia we decided to use phones. Phones are used for many different things one of them is communicating with many different people ( a group chat). We came up with the idea of a group chat becoming visual. I played the speaker so i was the virtual group chat so when Michelle spoke it would be what she was typing and i then said ‘message sent’ we thought this would be interesting for the audience to watch as it is not a normal piece of dialogue read to an audience.  We linked it with Antigone by having the characters from the play in the group chat we just shortened the names like ‘ cre and poly’. The setting was shown as a group of people together they then dispersed into there own settings at home like ‘on the sofa’ or ‘ in the kitchen’. Creon became a less harsh character who bullied Antigone rather than a leader and ruler. The rest of the group became one in a way they didn't portray there characters strongly because the scene was between Creon and Antigone. We changed the language completely and used a lot of slang.
